A Step-by-Step Guide to Registration

Step 4: Seek Academic Advising

Advising is mandatory for some majors:

Several departments restrict registration until you meet with a major advisor. Other departments reward you with a higher priority if you see your advisor before the registration period. Check with your major department for more information.

See your major advisor every semester

You can find your assigned major advisor by looking in your Portal account or by checking with the department of your major. If you have not declared a major, you should meet with an advisor in the Academic Advising Office, MLIB 190. If you are a graduate student, consult your graduate advisor or the Office of Graduate Programs, THMA 209, 530-898-6880.

Initialize and use your Portal account, to check for registration status, financial aid information, current address information, official study list, financial account status, academic advising information, and other personal information. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A bachelor’s degree consists of at least 120-132 units of credit, depending on the degree program you are pursuing. All degree requirements are described in the University Catalog. Chico is dedicated to giving you the best information and advising possible to assure that you can graduate on time. Please see “How to Graduate Within Your Planned Time Frame” in the University Catalog. Discuss your graduation plan and time frame with your advisor each semester. For planning assistance, see also the Major Academic Plans (MAP)available on The Chico Web in the Index to Degrees & Majors.

You may register for a maximum of 17 units per semester prior to the fee payment deadline. After the fee payment deadline, you will be limited to the number of units for which you have paid—none, part-time, or full-time. An average semester’s schedule consists of 15-16 units, but you are encouraged to discuss your course load with your advisor.Discuss these factors with your academic advisor.

You may add units up to a maximum of 21 per term without special petition during the add/drop period and the COP process. To take more than 21 units you must ask for the Petition for Excess Units from the Office of Student Records and Registration. You may have to add these excess units using the COP process after the second week of the semester. During the add/drop period, you may use the registration system if the petition has been filed in advance.
