Student Health Services (SHS) can provide limited outpatient health services for acute, sub-acute illness, minor injuries and transitional care for chronic issues during weekdays. SHS services include basic medical care, limited mental health care, preventative care, health education, contraception, STI treatment, travel medicine and immunizations with the support of an onsite lab, pharmacy and x-ray services.
It is not the intention of SHS to replace a student’s primary care provider. We do not offer the 24/7 services or continuity of a typical primary care office; given limitations in our staffing and our hours of operations. We are closed during the evenings, weekends and campus holidays. For students with chronic established illness or complex medical needs we encourage the ongoing relationship with a personal physician. For students residing far from home, consideration for a local community provider is suggested. SHS can offer interim care and referral services.
We recommend maintaining a health insurance plan for management of chronic illness or in the event of unexpected needs, such as ER care, hospitalization or referral. Students are responsible for expenses if seen at the hospital or other outside providers. For those who are uninsured we offer assistance in applying for Medi-cal or the county medical services plan.
When returning in follow up, we encourage students to ask for and make an appointment with the same provider when possible. Continuity of care with the same provider is more likely to result in better outcomes and patient satisfaction. However do not delay urgent care just to wait for a specific provider. Because of the limited scope of treatment offered, at some point in your care, you may be referred into the community for ongoing care if your clinical needs exceed what we can safely and reasonably provide for you.
SHS does not provide emergency medical care; nor do we manage care during hospitalization.
It is our hope at the Student Health Center, that our students will have a healthy and successful experience while attending CSU Chico. To reach that aim, we provide an array of preventative services including physical exams, immunizations, contraceptive care and STI screenings.
Includes visits with a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or nutrition interns. Students concerned with health-related problems are encouraged to make an appointment with a Health Center staff or student intern. Health education materials are available at the Health Center or online.
The WellCat fit program is an 8-10 week program to help you improve your mental and physical wellbeing through a self-selected physical activity program.
