SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES:

Scholarships are designed to help cover your educational expenses next year. In order to be eligible for Sociology or university scholarships, then, you must be continuing as a full-time student in Fall 2008. To apply for a Sociology scholarship, you must complete both of the following:

  1. The university application, which must be completed online at www.csuchico.edu/fa . The university application asks for some basic information, as well as short answers to a handful of open-ended questions about yourself and your accomplishments. Please note that the university application also requires that a faculty member submit a letter of recommendation for you. The deadline for the university application (including the letter of recommendation) is January 1, 2008.
  2. The departmental application to the Department of Sociology, which consists of filling out an Awards Application Cover Sheet, and writing a brief, one-to-two page essay specific to the scholarship to which you are applying. The Application Cover Sheet is available in the Sociology department office located in 615 Butte Hall. The deadline to turn in this essay and its accompanying cover sheet is February 4, 2008.

If you apply for more than one scholarship, you will only need to complete one online application, but will need to write separate essays for each scholarship for the department application. Scholarship applicants are strongly encouraged to also apply for Sociology Department Awards.

The deadline for Sociology Department Award applications is February 4, 2008.

An important measure of the quality of the sociology program is the number of awards received by sociology majors. Our students have been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally. Locally, sociology majors have received more than their proportionate share of the Glenn Kendall Public Service Awards and the Lt. Robert Merton Rawlins Awards, the two most prestigious student awards on campus. Regionally and nationally, our students have participated in professional organizations, including the American Sociological Association, the Pacific Sociological Association, the California Sociological Association, and the Western Anthropology-Sociology Undergraduate Research Conference. We have also placed students on the USA Today All American Academic Team and The Washington, D.C. Minority Student Leadership Internship Program.
