DIFFERENT QUESTION TYPES
There are three types of questions interviewers ask:
1) Theoretical questions: The interviewer puts the candidate in a hypothetical situation to test the skills in answering questions. This type of question tests organizational skills when communicating and gives the candidate the opportunity to share their individual personality.
Example: If given the opportunity to travel the world, how would you organize your trip?
2) Leading questions: The interviewer hints at the answer they are seeking by the way they phrase the question. Often, this type of question is asked because it has a specific answer relevant to the job.
Example: Traveling often does not really bother you, does it?
3) Behavioral questions: The interviewer is expecting the candidate to draw on past experiences. This type of question is seeking how the candidate would react in certain job related situations. There are three types of behavioral questions.
a) Open ended questions: These questions require more than a yes or no answer.
Example: Describe your responsibilities at your internship?
b) Close ended questions: These questions are asked to confirm or verify information. Answers to these type of questions are most often yes or no.
Example: You graduated from Chico State, correct?
c) Why questions: These questions explain actions performed in the past.
Example: Why did you choose the internship that you did?
* Interviewers assume the candidate understands the question being asked. If you do not understand the question, paraphrase the question in your own words or ask for clarification.
