Timelines For Admission
Applications to the Rural Teacher Residency (RTR) Program are due on the first of each month from October through January, for early consideration. The application deadline is January 11, though late applications may be considered based on space availability. Submit your application to Tehama Hall, room 401, by 4:00 p.m. on the application due date.Admission Policies

Minimum Eligibility
To be eligible to apply to the Rural Teacher Residency at CSU, Chico, you must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program year for which you are applying.
- Be a U.S. Citizen, national, or permanent resident.
- Have a Grade Point Average of 2.75 for your last 60 semester units and 3.0 for your last 30 semester units in order to be accepted for admission. If it is below either of these, inquire at the School of Education about the GPA appeal process.
- Provide verification of Basic Education Skills Requirement by providing one of the following or indicate an anticipated future test date:
- CBEST
- CSET Writing Skills Exam
- CSU Placement Test (ELM & EPT)
- Early Assessment Program (EAP – English & Math)
- Basic Skills exam from another state (See program adviser for passing criteria requirements needed.)
- Provide verification of California Subject Matter Competence Requirement by providing one of the following or indicate an anticipated future test date:
- CSET Multiple Subject Examination
- CSET Single Subject Examination (Specify subject area)
- Completion of an approved subject matter undergraduate preparation program and submission of an approved subject matter waiver form.

Subject Matter Competency
Multiple Subject Applicants
Applicants qualify for subject matter competence by passing all three subtests of the multiple subject California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET).
Education Specialist Applicants Have an option to qualify for subject matter in one of 2 ways:
- Multiple Subject - Subject Matter Competence
Applicants qualify for subject matter competence by passing all three subtests of the multiple subject CSET. - Single Subject – Subject Matter Competence
Applicants may qualify for subject matter competence by: Completing an approved subject matter preparation program at CSU, Chico (verified by the subject matter adviser in that department and sent directly to the Department of Education), or Completing a program at another university that is California Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved (must supply subject matter verification from that university), or Passing the appropriate California Subject Examination for Teachers.
Fingerprint Clearance
A Certificate of Clearance is a document that verifies you have completed the state's fingerprint and character and identification process. You must obtain a Certificate of Clearance prior to beginning Teaching Practicum I, or have a copy of an emergency permit on file with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

GPA Requirement
Your GPA must be 2.75 for your last 60 semester units or 2.67 overall in order to be accepted for admission. If it is below either of these, inquire at the Department of Education about the GPA appeal process.
