Single Subject Program Admission Requirements
Subject matter competence is required for program admission. Applicants may qualify for subject matter competence by:
- Completing an approved subject matter preparation program at CSU, Chico (verified by the subject matter adviser in that department and sent directly to the School of Education), or
- Completing a program at another university that is Commission on Teacher Credentialing approved (must supply signed subject matter verification from that university), or
- Passing the appropriate California Subject Examination for Teachers (CSET). CSET results are only valid for five years; results must be current through the entire credentiai program and the credential recommendation process. When completing the exams be sure to have your results sent to CSU, Chico.
Your GPA must be 2.75 for your last 60 semester units or 2.67 overall. If your GPA does not meet either of these minimums, inquire at the School of Education office about the GPA appeal process.
A baccalaureate or higher degree, except in professional education, from a regionally accredited college or university is required in order to obtain a credential recommendation. Click here for a list of accredited institutions.
Certificate of Clearance (fingerprint clearance) or a copy of an emergency permit must be on file before beginning teaching practicum I. Download instructions for the fingerprinting process and the certificate of clearance form (pdf).
Verification of having passed the entire California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) for Reading, Writing, and Mathematics is required for program admission. CBEST results do not expire. When completing the exam be sure to have your results sent to CSU, Chico. Additional options may be researched on the CTC website.
