OBJECTIVES:     Social Science 10 is a hands-on course designed to familiarize the student with the basic hardware and software for microcomputers including the Windows2000 operating system, Web browsers, E-mail, and the MS Office XP Professional package which includes word-processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), database (Access), and presentation graphic (Powerpoint). Additional practice using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), and electronic information transfer skills will be undertaken. This class will teach students about current and emerging technologies which can act as a foundation for use in the K-12 classroom. The emphasis in this course is on practice and practical application of the basic computing skills needed to be a productive member of the teaching-force in the 21st century. The text includes step-by-step practices where skills are developed and exercises are undertaken to test the student's understanding and ability to use this skills. All practices for assigned chapters should be undertaken, but only selected exercises will be turned in for grading. Although this is primarily a skills based course, elementary understanding of computing fundamentals and vocabulary are an essential part of the curriculum.  Prospective teachers will be introduced to some of the ethical and social issues regarding privacy and the use of the Internet and computer technology.
