Course Objectives: During the lecture and lab experiences within this course the student shall:

1. Become familiar and comfortable with the basic hardware, software and operation of microcomputers within Windows2000, and the CD ROM environment.

2. Understand the uses of word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, communications & statistical analysis programs and demonstrate skill in their utilization.

3. Evaluate software & hardware with an eye to meeting future personal or professional computing needs.

4. Be familiar with capabilities and operation of a Local Area Network and resources on the Internet.

5. Understand the responsibilities and ethical issues involved in modern computing.

Social Science 10 Class Notes Packet at A.S. Bookstore for Gwen Sheldon’s sections

Supplies: 5 Diskettes: 3.5" HIGH DENSITY Disks (IBM/PC compatible).

Assignments & Grading 525 points

12 daily Lab assignments (20 points each, 2 lowest Lab grades dropped) (200 points total)

3 original assignments on: word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software (40 pts. Each)

2 Midterm Exams covering lecture & texts (40 points each)

5 Skill Tests on the computer (25 points each)

Policy on late work: Most assignments will be due when class begins, unless otherwise specified. Printing will not be allowed at the beginning of class, which is lecture time. Assignments turned in after class begins, will be considered one day late. Assignments turned in late will be penalized 10% per week. Lab assignments will be accepted no later than 1 week, HW assignments no later than 2 weeks. See the instructor in the case of serious and compelling reasons (serious illness, etc.). The 2 lowest Lab Assignment grades will be dropped, giving you a cushion for illness, emergency or "a bad week." (Low Skill Test Grades will not be dropped.) Makeup exams will only be allowed with a note from a physician and notice to the instructor prior to begin-ning of the exam. Remember that your final grade will be determined by your grades on assignments & tests.

Attendance: While attendance will not be taken, missing class will usually greatly impact on your grade, because students who miss class very often do not complete their assignments. Excessive absences make it extremely difficult for the student to catch up with the class once they have gotten behind.

Lab Hours And Assistance

Butte 207, 209 & 211 are open for your use outside of class time. 207 is used as a classroom for other classes so OPEN LAB times are limited. Check the schedule that is available online as indicated in the opening messages from the network administrator. (This schedule is also posted in the bulletin board by the entrance to the lab). Other campus labs (in Tehama & Library) have the same software. You will need to work on a PC computer (with Windows and Office 2000 software) outside of class time to complete the assignments; so plan to spend time computing at home or in a campus lab.

Disability

If you have a documented disability that may require reasonable accommodations, please contact Disability Support Services (DSS) for coordination of your academic accommodations.  DSS is located in Building E.  Building E is adjacent to Meriam Library and Bell Memorial Union (BMU).  The DSS phone number is 898-5959 Y/TTY or Fax 898-4411.  Visit the DSS website at http://www.csuchico.edu/dss/
