COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to identify, describe and illustrate techniques that are used in a more comprehensive approach to career counseling.  The first segment of the class will be devoted to the development of the basic attending skills: listening, open and closed questions, clarifying, reflecting and summarizing.  The next segment will focus on techniques that a counselor can use to enhance a client’s (1) cognitive clarity while simultaneously dealing with career development concerns, (2) self-awareness, (3) goal setting and decision making, (4) career exploration, (5) career and life-role integration, and (6) termination.  Techniques for use during the initial stage of career counseling as well as strategies for dealing with the unique career development problems associated with ethnicity, race and gender will be discussed.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Exams:  There will be two midterm exams (75 points each) and one take-home final exam (150 points). The midterm exams will have both subjective and objective components.  The final will be an applied essay exam.  Make-up exams will be given only if arrangements are made PRIOR  to the date of the exam and only at the CSU, Chico campus.

Portfolio:  Each student will develop a portfolio throughout the semester consisting of completed exercises and counseling sessions with a client of your choice.   The portfolio will contain the following:

Assigned Exercises:  You will complete ten (10) exercises with your client during the semester to obtain hands-on experience with specific career techniques.  (100 points)

Videos:  You will be required to videotape two counseling sessions conducted with your client during the semester (75 points each).  A separate handout will give the specific requirements for the videos.

Written Analysis:  You will write an analysis of your counseling experience with your client including initial problem, goal(s), techniques you used and why, effectiveness of each exercise, and outcome of the counseling experience.  (50 points)

Journal/Magazine/Newspaper Articles: Each student will be required to present an article relating to career development.  This article may be obtained from professional journals, magazines or newspapers.  Specific requirements will be distributed the first week of class and students will sign-up during the second class session.  (75 points)

Class Participation: There will be numerous group and experiential activities during class to facilitate your understanding of the techniques that will be presented.  It is very important that all students come to class prepared and willing to participate in these activities.  You will be graded on your participation and attendance.  (75 points)

All assignments must be turned in (or postmarked for those at CSUSAT sites) on the date due.  NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
