COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course is
designed to identify, describe and illustrate techniques that are used in a
more comprehensive approach to career counseling. The first segment of the class will be
devoted to the development of the basic attending skills: listening, open and
closed questions, clarifying, reflecting and summarizing. The next segment will focus on techniques
that a counselor can use to enhance a client’s (1) cognitive clarity while
simultaneously dealing with career development concerns, (2) self-awareness,
(3) goal setting and decision making, (4) career exploration, (5) career and
life-role integration, and (6) termination.
Techniques for use during the initial stage of career counseling as well
as strategies for dealing with the unique career development problems
associated with ethnicity, race and gender will be discussed.
