Freshmen Orientation Concentrating on University Success

What is Summer FOCUS?

Summer FOCUS will give you a glimpse at what college life will be like when you join the campus community in August. You will be able to attend Summer Orientation, have one-on-one help registering for classes, take your Wildcat ID picture, attend workshops on Financial Aid and Housing, and a priceless opportunity to meet new friends before coming back in August.

FOCUS is sponsored by a federal Student Support Service TRiO grant that supports low income and first generation students as they work towards earning college degrees. Students that are invited to attend FOCUS are a unique student group at Chico State that has a chance to take on a leadership role the summer before starting classes. This gives SSS FOCUS students a head start by knowing what resources are on campus, getting financial aid information and meeting new friends.

Why Have I Been Invited?

Your name was given to Student Support Services from Financial Aid because your application indicated that you are a first generation and low income student. This makes you eligible to receive SSS services that other students do not.

How is FOCUS Different From Summer Orientation?

FOCUS gives you a chance to live in the dorms for four days and get a better grounding on campus. You will have the chance to talk with a Financial Aid counselor about your status for the fall, as well as attend workshops that will help your transition to Chico State. By attending FOCUS you do not have to pay to attend the campus registration.

How much does FOCUS cost?

There is no cost to you. SSS pays for your housing, meals and SSS waives your fee for Summer Orientation. Activities, workshops and supplies for the four days are covered. You are only responsible for your personal travel expenses to and from campus.
