Lesson One-Creating a Site Map
How To Create Your First Dreamweaver Web Site
Dreamweaver 4.0 lets you quickly build your site. Create one now by following this list of tasks.
1. Click on Site>New Site in the Dreamweaver 4.0's main menu bar.

The Site Definition dialog box appears.
2. Type in the name of your site in the Site Name: text box.
3. Type in the location of the site in the Local Root Folder: text box.
Alternatively, you can use the folder icon next to the text box to select the folder location on your computer's hard drive [or other drive location]. In addition, you may need to type in the URL in the HTTP Address: text box to enable the Link Checker to detect your site's HTTP Links.

This creates your local site folder and site map.
The Site Map page appears with the Local Folder file listing of your site's files. In the example below, notice that files already exist. You will create files similar to this in the following tutorial lessons.

Creating a Site Folder
Now that your site has a local root, create your main folder to store your site's Web page files. You will want to create site folders to organize your site and to quickly locate Web page files you will need to edit.
Create a new folder by highlighting the local site folder at the top of your local folder. (In the example above, this folder is [C:\001\Chico\Society for Technical Communication].
1. Click on the uppermost file folder for your site.
2. Click on the File menu on the main menu bar.
3. Click on New Folder (Ctr+Alt+Shift+N).
A new folder appears under your site's local site folder.

This tutorial will use "About the Society for Technical Communication" in the text box to replace "Untitled" for the name of your folder.
You just created a new folder for your Web site.
Creating Your First Site Page
The process for creating your first Web page is similar.
1. Click on your new folder to select it (highlight the folder).
This tutorial will use the "About the Society for Technical Communication" folder.
2. Click on the File menu on the main menu bar.
3. Click on New File (Ctr+Shift+N).
A new file appears under your site's new folder.
Figure 5- Site Map page and new, "untitled" file.4. Next to the file icon, type a name in the text box to replace "untitled" with your own file name for the Web site folder.
This tutorial will use "Dreamweaver Tutorial Documentation Page" in the text box to replace "Untitled" for the name of your file. If you prefer, you can title it your "Home Page."
You just created a new file for your Web site. This file is your Web site's first page.
5. Double click your new file icon.
The new Web page appears for editing.
6. Type the name of your Web page in the Title: text box.
This tutorial will use "Dreamweaver Tutorial Documentation Page" in the text box to name your Web page.

Note in this graphic that part of the Objects panel (bottom left) and part of the Property inspector panel (bottom right) are visible. In your next few lessons, you will learn to use the tools in these panels. For now, you only need to know that their presence confirms you are in an editable Web page.
