Dreamweaver 4.0 Tutorial

Part 1-Creating a Site Plan

How to Create a Site Plan

Developing a great Web site requires planning and often includes several key stages. The following stages outline the process:

1. Planning your site.

2. Designing your site.

3. Developing your site.

4. Publishing your site.

5. Maintaining your site.

Planning the site begins with asking yourself several important questions:

  • Who will use my site?
  • What are the goals for my site?
  • What technical assets do I need?
  • How should I organize my site?

You can begin planning your site in Dreamweaver 4.0. After Dreamweaver 4.0 launches, several floating elements appear. Go to the menu bar and select the Site menu.

Include a graphic of the menu here: New Sites, Open Sites, and Design Sites.

Options, such as the above, allow you to create folders for your site, open site folders to work on, or define files you already have as a local site. A local site is the storage locations for all of the files you will use in developing and publishing your site.

Once you define a site in Dreamweaver 4.0, you can structure the site anyway you want, adding, deleting, moving, and renaming files within your site map window. Use the site map window when moving sites around to prevent site links from breaking.

When you make changes in your site, Dreamweaver 4.0 automatically saves and updates the original site folder on your local hard drive.

Once you plan your site's structure, you are ready to develop your site's Web pages.

Insert graphic of navigation icon and site window.

You can use the site navigation window to view your site's structure. After you have a structure for your site, click the navigation icon to view your site's structure in the site navigation window.
