You will need to complete the following steps to prepare your computer before you take an online course. Use the links below or on the menu at the left side. 1. Review recommended computer hardware, software, and Internet connectivity requirements for WebCT Learn about the minimum and ideal requirements for your computer, including specifications for speed, RAM, and operating systems. In addition, a brief overview of Internet connectivity, browsers, and plug-ins is included. See also information on buying, leasing, or upgrading your computer to meet recommended requirements. 2. Establish service with an ISP (Internet service provider) Learn about Internet service providers, how they work, definitions to common terms, how you can access Chico's library journals or resources, and access links to Internet Service Providers you may wish to use. 3. Make sure you have a supported web browser (Internet Explorer 4.0 and newer) Student Computing recommends that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5 and install all critical updates from Microsoft for Windows PCs. If you are using a Macintosh, Internet Explorer 5.0 is the latest version. On Windows, to upgrade to IE 5.5, click on the Start button on the taskbar on your PC's desktop and click on Windows Update (also available in IE under the Tools menu). 4. Download Plug-ins Your online class may require you to have installed free plug-ins for your web browser in order to view certain files. Included is a list of recommended plug-ins and links for downloading them. 5. Verify that your plug-ins are working correctly Once you have installed a plug-in, you should test its functionality. Look on each plug-in vendor's web site for assistance in trouble-shooting problems, or call Student Computing. 6. Accessing the Live and Archived Class Sessions If you have successfully completed steps 1 through 5 above, your computer should be ready to access these class sessions. However, it is important you run the HorizonLive Wizard by clicking on the following link to ensure you are ready to participate in live or archived class sessions. The wizard will verify all needed software is available and working. It will not install any software on your computer. Please note that Internet Explorer on the Macintosh will not work with HorizonLive class sessions. Please attempt to view this sample course to verify you can access a class session using HorizonLive. If you have questions concerning your enrollment in the course contact the Center Regional and Continuing Education at 530-898-6105 or by email at rce@csuchico.edu. |
