SFTP: Secure File Transfer Protocol

FTP vs. SFTP

FTP (or File Transfer Protocol) is used to transfer files from your computer to a remote server that can be accessed by the internet. SFTP allows you to transfer your files just like regular FTP, except that all of your files and login information are encrypted in order to increase security.

V. Special Info for Student Organizations

You can make a link to your student Organization's folder to make ftp easier and faster.

B. Another way to FTP, that makes the process extremely easy, is to create a file link to your organization’s directory. This is the process:

Go to the “Start” menu and select “Run”

Type in: telnet www.csuchico.edu

Login with your shell id and portal password (if you do not know your shell id, contact the Student computing help desk at (530) 898-HELP)

At the “$” prompt you will type in:

$ In –s /m3/webdocs/“organization’s name”

Next, open Internet Explorer and type ftp://login@www.csuchico.edu/ in the address bar:

Address bar with ftp login

It will ask you for a login and password, which is your Shell id and portal password

Picture of a fileYour organization’s directory will be in a folder that looks like one of the two examples below (with your organization’s name under it):

When you want to go to your directory, just open the folder

You can also use WinScp or Fugu, and the link will still be there
