Programs Overview


Chico State offers a wide range of programs for varying lengths of time.


University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC)

USAC is a non-profit organization based out of the University of Nevada, Reno. USAC is a consortium of 32 American Universities (including CSU, Chico) and offers options in over 37 program sites in 25 different countries. Programs are available for a summer, winter intersession, semester or entire year (two semesters). Students who go abroad on USAC will receive CSU resident credit at Chico for all coursework taken abroad. The USAC Central Office and consortium staff work with Resident Directors and Program Coordinators overseas to ensure that each student receives personalized care and attention.

USAC accepts all federal financial aid and student loans. California aid and Work Study do not apply.

Direct Exchanges

These programs are offered through bilateral exchange agreements between CSU, Chico and our partner universities overseas in order to provide students with a complete cultural immersion experience abroad. Each Direct Exchange program has a unique arrangement upon which the exchange was founded and varies in terms of exchange duration, course offerings, requirements, application procedures and services offered to exchange students.

CSU, International Programs (IP)

International Programs (IP) is the system-wide study abroad program of the California State University. IP provides students with year-long international academic opportunities which fit into the framework of a California State University degree program of nearly any discipline. IP is affiliated with over 50 distinguished universities and institutions of higher education in Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, France, Ger­many, Ghana, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

All Federal and California financial aid (except for Work Study) and student loans apply.

American Institute of Foreign Studies (AIFS)

AIFS is recognized as a leading provider of study abroad programs. Since 1964, over 1.5 million students have traveled abroad with AIFS. With more than 50 years of experience, AIFS has the resources and experience to provide valuable study abroad programs, and to safeguard student welfare around the globe. AIFS program fees are guaranteed in U.S. dollars and are also all-inclusive.

Faculty-Led Programs

Faculty-Led Programs are usually offered during summer break or January intersession and are taught by one or more CSU, Chico faculty members abroad.  Faculty-led options provide CSU, Chico students the opportunity for a short-term experience abroad as they take a CSU, Chico course with hands-on experience and true visualization. The Faculty-led programs offered may change on a yearly basis, but previous programs have included trips to Antigua, England, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and Thailand.
