Michael McDonald

Turkey, Israel, Africa, & Undecided Peer Advisor

Michael McDonald is a fourth year student studying Business and International Relations.  He went to study abroad in Istanbul, Turkey at Bahcesehir University for two semesters.  Living on the European side and occasionally taking a ferry ride across the Bosphorus to the Anatolian side, he was able to immerse himself in a vibrant but traditional culture.  Istanbul is the city that never sleeps where one can always find something new and every neighborhood is unique in its own way.  Michael also enjoys eating Turkish food, speaking with the locals, and drinking cay while watching the ships go by.  He was also able to travel to other parts of Turkey where there are ancient relics of a past time and to explore underground cities where people dwelled.  Working for a Turkish Mobile App developer he understood how the future of Turkey’s economy and culture are ever changing in an increasing globalized world.   By living in an Islamic society it helped open new ways of thinking and a larger perspective on the Islamic religion and how it intertwines in daily life.  Study Abroad will change you and make you a different person.  To quickly get a grasp of what it is like to study abroad in an extremely banal way, Tennyson's poem puts it perfectly,

'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
