Keynote Presentation

Co-Founder and CEO, Belcampo

Anya is the co-founder and CEO of Belcampo, a group of innovative agricultural companies in California, Belize, and Uruguay that strive to make good food the old fashioned way on a larger scale than ever before. Belcampo employs over a hundred people and plans to grow awareness, availability, and production of sustainably farmed food. In 2011, Anya founded the non-profit Food Craft Institute and currently serves as its board chair.

Anya has developed her expertise in sustainable food and business management with over a decade of hands-on experience. Her career in food began as an itinerant cheesemaker in Europe and North Africa thanks to a Watson fellowship. Anya then gained knowledge of the business side of food making by developing and implementing business and marketing plans for small-scale cheesemakers in Sicily for a European Union rural development initiative in 2000 and 2001. She then moved on to direct the International Presidia program at the Slow Food Foundation;in Italy, where she devised and instigated a micro-investment program that managed business planning and marketing for small-scale artisan food producers in countries such as Madagascar, Sweden, Ecuador, and Bosnia between 2001 and 2005. Returning to her home state of California in 2006, Anya directed a statewide Farm-to-School initiative in over 100 low-income schools, and launched the California Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign. In the summer of 2007, she became the Executive Director of Slow Food Nation, and soon founded Live Culture Co., a business and marketing consulting firm that advised, supported, and further developed over two dozen profitable, values-driven food businesses in its three years of activity.  

Anya has been recognized as one of the 40 under 40 by Food & Wine Magazine, named a Nifty Fifty by the New York Times, appeared as a regular judge on Iron Chef America on the Food Network for the 2009, 2010, and 2011 seasons, and has co-authored two books for Slow Food’s international publishing house. Anya is an avid consumer and producer of almost everything fermented, and spends her spare time as a pasta taster and noodle namer for her husband Renato Sardo’s new venture, Baia Pasta.

Michael R. Dimock, President of Roots of Change Fund (ROC), is a national food movement organizer and thought leader on sustainable food and farming systems. ROC is a philanthropic intermediary and “think tank, do tank” delivering road maps to success that are designed to unify the food movement in California. Michael has focused on agriculture and food since 1989. He was a marketing executive in Europe for agribusiness, farmed organically for three years in Sonoma County, and in 1992 founded Ag Innovations Network, where he began his work on consensus building and strategic planning to create healthier food and agriculture. From 2002 to 2007, he was Chairman of Slow Food USA. Author, Katrina Fried, and Photographer, Paul Mobley, feature Michael in their latest book, Everyday Heroes: 50 Americans Changing The World, published in October 2012. Michael received a BA in History with Honors at UCLA in 1983 and a Masters in International Affairs at Columbia University in 1988.

John was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri and received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Missouri. He worked in private industry for a time and spent thirty years in various professorial positions at North Carolina State University, Oklahoma State University, University of Georgia, and the University of Missouri before retiring in early 2000. Since retiring, he spends most of his time writing and speaking on issues related to sustainability with an emphasis on economics and agriculture. He currently resides in Fairfield, IA with his wife, Ellen, two dogs, and three cats. KAREN ROSS was appointed Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture on January 12, 2011 by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. Secretary Ross has deep leadership experience in agricultural issues nationally, internationally, and here in California. Prior to joining CDFA, Secretary Ross was chief of staff for U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a position she accepted in 2009. Before her time at the United States Department of Agriculture, Secretary Ross served more than thirteen years as President of the California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG), based in Sacramento. During that same period she served as the Executive Director of Winegrape Growers of America, a coalition of state winegrower organizations, and as Executive Director of the California Wine Grape Growers Foundation, which sponsors scholarships for the children of vineyard employees. Among Secretary Ross’ many achievements at CAWG was the creation of the nationally-recognized Sustainable Winegrowing Program, which assists wine grape growers in maintaining the long-term viability of agricultural lands and encourages them to provide leadership in protecting the environment, conserving natural resources, and enhancing their local communities.

Dr. Dayna Baumeister’s fascination with the natural world began with daily forays into the woods and mountains of Colorado, her childhood home. As an adult, nature has continued to inform her personal and professional endeavors. Dayna received a BS in marine biology from New College in Sarasota, Florida. After several years exploring the intricate relationships of coral reefs, she turned in her wetsuit and headed back to the mountains.  She earned an MS in resource conservation and a PhD in organismic biology and ecology from The University of Montana in Missoula, specializing in the dynamics of positive interactions among animal and plant life.

With a background in biology, a devotion to applied natural history, and a passion for sharing the wonders of nature with others, Dayna has worked in the field of biomimicry with business partner Janine Benyus since 1998 as a business catalyst, educator, researcher, and design consultant. Together they founded the Biomimicry Guild consulting practice, The Biomimicry Institute 501c3, and most recently, Biomimicry3.8, a B-Corp social enterprise that trains, certifies, and connects biomimicry professionals worldwide. |
