What is social security?
The Social Security program is the U.S. government's social insurance plan. It is supported by financial withholdings from the employee's salary and contributions from the employer. It is intended to support retired people, the injured, disabled and others without financial support who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

How do I get a social security number Until recently anyone could apply and receive a social security number. Now, anyone wishing to obtain a social security number needs:

1. A statement from the university employer (on campus) stating that:
2. the applicant - name - has a job,
3. where the job is,
4. and when the job will start.
Additionally, the applicant must present
5. his/her passport,
6. I-20 form student copy, and
7. the I-94 Departure card together with the application.
