Integration through Project Based Learning

Chico Country Day School is a K-8 charter school that serves 555 students.  One of the foundations of our charter is Integrated Thematic Instruction.  By the time the students reach grades 4, 5 and 6th, they are well-versed in thematic learning, multiple intelligences, and have completed culminating projects in their self-contained classrooms.

Although our 4,5,6 grade school team works very well together, creating integrated units has presented some challenges.  Our team will be pursuing professional development in Project Based Learning as a means for integrating our content and engaging students in their learning.

Project Based Learning meshes well with the culture that is already established at our school.  We have regular professional development at school in brain-based teaching and we have all been trained in Integrated Thematic Instruction.  In grades 4, 5, 6, the students are primed for learning through the methods of Project Based Learning. The foundations for this are built through the younger grades at our school and the professional development our team would receive would allow us to extend this learning through the 4, 5, 6th grades.
