EPT/ELM - English Placement Test & Entry Level Mathematics Exam

The California State University System requires that you take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam prior to enrollment in the CSU System unless you are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests and/or coursework. Exemptions can be found here.

The EPT and ELM are not Admissions Tests; instead, they determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT and ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to enroll in any coursework at CSU, Chico. If you do not perform well on the tests, you will be placed into an appropriate remedial program during your first term at Chico State.

The EPT may only be taken one time.  You may repeat the ELM exam.

Attention EOP Applicants:  You MUST take these tests no later than March.

International Students:  Contact the Office of International Education for additional information regarding the EPT.
