The California State University system requires that you take the English Placement Test (EPT) and the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam after admission and prior to enrollment in the CSU unless you are exempt by means of scores earned on other appropriate tests. The EPT and ELM are not admission tests; instead, they determine eligibility to enroll in specific courses. If you are required to take the EPT and ELM but fail to do so, you will not be allowed to enroll. If you do not perform well on the tests, you will be placed in an appropriate remedial or developmental program or activity during your first term of enrollment.
English Placement Test (EPT)
The English Placement Test (EPT) assesses your level of ability in reading and writing. You may take the EPT only once. Unless exempt, all new undergraduate students must take the EPT prior to enrollment at CSU, Chico. (See list of exemptions in Test Office.) Your EPT score is used to determine if you are ready to enroll directly in the GE course, English 1, or need to take the additional English 1A workshop.
Reporting for the Test: Check your admission ticket for reporting time and location.
What to Bring With You:
- Admission ticket.
- Acceptable identification. YOU WILL NOT BE ADMITTED TO THE TEST WITHOUT AN ACCEPTABLE ID.
- Check or money order for $18 (payable to ETS-EPT/ELM).
- Several #2 pencils and two ball-point pens.
Entry Level Mathematics (ELM)
The Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) exam assesses your level of ability in math through beginning and intermediate algebra, and plane geometry. If you wish, you may take this test more than once to improve your score, but you are not required to do so because you are not required to pass the ELM. Unless exempt, all new undergraduate students must take the ELM prior to enrollment at CSU, Chico. (See list of exemptions in Test Office.) Your ELM score is used to determine if you are ready to enroll immediately in a general education math course or need to take a prerequisite course first, such as intermediate algebra or beginning algebra.
