Testing Program Information

Graduate Record Examinations

The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE), administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), are generally taken by individuals applying to graduate schools. The GRE General Test measures critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. The GRE General Test is available year-round from authorized testing centers worldwide as a Computer-Based Test (CBT). Candidates may take the GRE General Test only once per calendar month up to five times per year, even if the test scores are canceled.

GRE Identification Requirements are strictly enforced. You must have acceptable and valid identification to be admitted to a test center. If positive confirmation cannot be made, you may not be allowed to test.

GRE General Test (CBT) Structure

Analytical Writing (AW): 75 minute section - 2 writing tasks:
Present Your Perspective on an Issue - 45 minutes
Analyze an Argument - 30 minutes
Verbal (Q): 30 minute section - 30 questions
Quantitative (Q): 45 minute section - 28 questions

In addition, an unidentified V or Q section that doesn't count toward a score may be included. Be sure to do both V and Q sections since you won't know which one will be counted as your score. An identified research section that is not scored may also be included in the computer-based general test.

ON THE TEST DATE: Report to your assigned testing center at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted, and your test fee will be forfeited. Standby Testing is offered on a first-come, first-served basis (if space is available).

GRE Subject Tests

GRE Subject Tests measure achievement in a particular subject area and assume an undergraduate major or extensive background in that discipline. The GRE Subject Tests are designed to help graduate school admission committees and fellowship sponsors assess the qualifications of applicants in specific fields of study. The tests also provide students with an assessment of their own qualifications. GRE Subject Tests are given in eight subject areas and are available only as paper-based tests. The GRE Subject Tests each have a testing time of 2 hours 50 minutes. Be sure to allow an additional 45-60 minutes to check in and fill out answer sheets.

ON THE TEST DATE: Report to the test center no later than 8:30 a.m. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted, and your test fee will be forfeited. Standby testing may be available if sufficient space, test materials, and staff are available at the test center.
