Dr. Katie Whitlock is a graduate of The Ohio State University where
she received her PhD in theatre history, literature, and criticism
in 2004. She also received an MFA. in theatrical design from the
University of Memphis, specializing in sound design, and a BFA. in
stage and arts management from the University of Arizona. She taught
at the University of Arizona, The Ohio State University, the University
of Memphis, and the University of Florida. Her practical and scholarly
work revolves around intersections of performance and technology
with a particular interest in the nature of video games as the latest
in a long line of interactive art forms. Her dissertation was entitled Theatre
and the Video Game: Beauty and the Beast, hinting at the
connections between theatrical narrative, character, and design as
related to the latest, hippest trends in video game design and culture.
She has presented at several conferences including the Mid-America
Theatre Conference, the Association for Theatre in Higher Education,
the International Federation for Theatre Research and the Popular
Culture Association/American Culture Association. As a designer and
director, Katie has been involved with several transdisciplinary
projects that serve to link animation, music, and performance. Her
favorite sound designs have included Angels in America Part II: Perestroika, Uncommon
Clay (a devised work about the life of Camille Claudel), Viet
Rock, Another Part of the House, and Hamlet.
