Vista Training

Preventing Plagiarism

What software is available to use?

The  plagiarism prevention software currently used by CSU Chico is Turnitin. This software is easily integrated into the Vista learning management system by using the PowerLink and is available to all instructors. No registration or passwords are required to use it.

What does Turnitin do?

Turnitin can replace the standard Vista Assignment tool. When student work is submitted to a Turnitin assignment, the material is checked against Turnitin.com's database of billions of internet pages and previously submitted student work for originality. An originality report is then generated for the faculty member or the student, depending on the settings determined by the instructor.

For more information, read about it on Turnitin.com.

How to use Turnitin

Please download the Tutorial for full instructions to use Turnitin in your Vista course.

Additional Information

Since in most cases students own the copyrights to their works, please keep in mind that they should be informed that a copy of their paper will be sent to Turnitin.com and become part of Turnitin's database. For students who don't agree to this, Turnitin suggest that you offer alternatives, such as: "the student could be required to turn in a photocopy of the first page of all reference sources used, an annotated bibliography, and a one page paper reflecting on their research methodology."
