“If there is such a thing as a first family of Afro-Cuban jazz, the O’Farrill clan has a right to claim that distinction.” The New York Times
Hot Latin rhythms, a blistering horn section, and maestro Arturo O’Farrill transport music lovers to a Caribbean beach or a steamy night in Spanish Harlem. An accomplished pianist, Mr. O’Farrill initially left his mark playing with Dizzy Gillespie, Harry Belafonte, and Wynton Marsalis. The award-winning composer, musician, and educator founded the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in 2002 to celebrate Latin jazz through international tours and the commissioning of new works. Their hard work was rewarded with the 2009 Grammy for best Latin Jazz Album, appropriately named for this night’s performance, Song for Chico.
Following Arturo O’Farrill’s performance, we invite you to extend your evening with coffee and dessert on the portico of Laxson Auditorium, weather permitting.
Arturo O’Ferrill’s performance is part of the 2015 Nor Cal Jazz Festival. The Nor Cal Jazz Festival promotes Jazz, “Americas Music,” throughout northern California. Click on the logo to the left for a complete schedule of events.
