“They play the kind of jazz you listen to on your old record player and pretend life is in black and white.” The Wild Honey Pie
Take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section led by a stride-piano virtuoso in the Fats Waller vein, and tie the whole thing together with a one-of-the-boys front–woman with a voice from another era, and you have The Hot Sardines. Lead singer Miz Elizabeth sets the tone for the night when she muses, “When nothing makes sense, there’s something real and satisfying about going to hear raucous jazz played in a dance hall with wooden floors and brown liquor.” People will be talking about this one for years to come.
Following The Hot Sardines performance, we invite you to extend your evening with coffee and dessert on the portico of Laxson Auditorium, weather permitting.
If you like The Hot Sardines, we also recommend: The Hot Club of San Francisco, Allen Toussaint & the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Buddy Guy, Arturo O’Farrill Octet.
