Marking the 150th anniversary of Darwin's On the Origin of Species, molecular biologist, geneticist, and investigator Sean Carroll continues the examination of evolutionary science. Carroll explores evolution from a biological point of view, weaving paleontology, naturalism, and molecular geology into an exciting new field known as Evo Devo — how DNA influences evolution in regards to animal diversity. His ground-breaking work has been lauded in Time, U.S. News & World Report, and The New York Times.

Carroll is this years President’s Lecture Series Speaker.

"On the Creek" Lecture Series Emphasizes Sustainability and Environmental Awareness

In an effort to continue to educate the community and to highlight the issues that matter most in today's world, Chico Performances is again bringing speakers with an environmental or sustainability focus to CSU, Chico. These speakers are featured in the On the Creek Lecture Series for the 2009–2010 season.

The On the Creek Lecture Series explores sustainability and environmental issues that affect our world today, by featuring reputable and knowledgeable speakers, authors, scientists and activists who focus on environmental issues, travel, conservation, global warming and preservation. The featured speakers for the 2009–2010 On The Creek Lecture Series include molecular biologist, geneticist, and investigator Sean Carroll and environmentalist and actress Daryl Hannah.

Sean Carroll: Evo Devo

Speaking first for the On The Creek Lecture Series, as well as the featured speaker in the annual President's Lecture Series, is molecular biologist, geneticist and investigator Sean Carroll. While at Chico State, Carroll will interact with students and teachers and speak publicly about his new and exciting branch of science known as "Evo Devo" on Friday October 9, 2009 in Laxson Auditorium. "Evo Devo" is the scientific examination of the relationship between DNA and how it influences genetic diversity.

Carroll's work has received notoriety and praise for the way in which he combines paleontology, naturalism, and molecular geology in order to continue the work of evolutionary investigators of the past. His appearance coincides with the 50th anniversary of Darwin's On the Origin of Species. The work of Darwin is continued through a biologist's perspective in the groundbreaking work of Sean Carroll.

Carroll's work has been published in such reputable forums as Time, U.S. News and World Report, and The New York Times. His renowned appearance at Chico State is sponsored by the office of the President and the Provost.

Also lecturing as a part of the On The Creek Lecture Series is Daryl Hannah on November sixth 2009.

Carroll’s lecture is also a part of the President's Lecture Series. This time honored tradition was started in 1998 in order to bring enriched knowledge from a variety of fields to the Chico community. This lecture is supported by the Office of the President and co-sponsored by Chico Performances.

Launched in 1998, the prestigious President's Lecture Series has hosted several Nobel Peace Prize winners, along with other high profile speakers. Co-sponsored by Chico Performances, this community-oriented event is also sponsored by the Office of the President and the Provost's Office at CSU, Chico, as well as several community and business sponsors throughout the years.
