Imagine you can see a song. It is spun of thousands of threads in countless colors. Some are dark and rich, others are light and shiny. They have texture, some thick, some so fine they are nearly invisible. The threads intertwine in a complex harmony; a symphony of sight, a tapestry of sound.
Classical guitarist Robert Bluestone and textile artist Rebecca Bluestone see the music and hear the tapestry. He plays classical guitar; she weaves contemporary works of art. One speaks to the ears, the other to the eyes. What emerges in their presentations is an artistic vision which opens the spirit to what it means to be truly alive.
In this multi-media performance, Rebecca's tapestries will be showcased on the stage at Laxson, and we will hear the music that intertwines with them from the guitar of Robert. Using slides, power-point, words, music and art, Woven Harmony lets the audience glimpse into the creative process that compels both of these artists to create. This promises to be an evening that is truly inspirational for both the eyes and the ears.
Robert and Rebecca are each fascinated by the interplay of the subtle variations of sonic and visual tints in their work. Visualize the rich fabric of a musical phrase, as the vibrant sound of the guitarist interweaves clarity, tonal colors and sonic richness from the instrument Beethoven called "a small orchestra in itself."
The work of these artists is based upon common ground: guitar and loom are both handmade, tightly strung wooden instruments requiring a shared love of form and texture, ton and timbre, honed by hours of solitary practice. Together, these two have combined their love and appreciation of art, music, wood and strings into an evening that is unique and unforgettable. The Bluestone's "State of Grace" presentation evolved out of their desire to use their artistic expression as a way to communicate about the things that they feel are truly important in life and to share how creativity and imagination can allow us access to connection, empathy and compassion. Rebecca Bluestone herself is an ovarian cancer survivor and was a caregiver to her late mother who died of breast cancer. They are committed to going into a wide variety of healthcare settings sharing their artistry, relationship and experience with cancer. They are sensitive to not imposing a template from the outside, but rather to composing a presentation that is appropriate in each moment. "State of Grace" is applicable for patients, family members, volunteers, staff and anyone committed to creating "wellness" in their life.
