CSU,Chico Faculty and Staff Password Procedure Changes -- October 2006
One strong password – It’s easier and it’s more secure.
Beginning October 3rd – The next time you change your Exchange password, your Portal password will be updated as well. This means you will have one username and password to access the majority of campus systems.
Background:
Current CSU, Chico faculty and staff have both an Exchange and Portal account. Some campus services authenticate using Exchange credentials (such as Outlook and Chico domain computer login) and others use Portal credentials (such as The Portal, Wireless, Dial-up, VPN, Web server, etc.)
For each, the user ID is the same, but the passwords are different. In addition, password construction rules and expiration rules are different. Exchange accounts expire every 180 days and have strong construction requirements. Portal passwords have weak construction requirements and never expire.
We recognize that having multiple passwords with different requirements is confusing, and difficult to keep track of. This scenario has also fostered a less secure computing environment. In order to comply with FISMA audit requirements, Portal password construction rules must be strengthened to meet stricter requirements and expire every 180 days – the same requirements currently used by Exchange.
Solution:
Instead of requiring users to maintain two different passwords, with 2 different expiration schedules, Exchange will now be processing password changes for both systems. Whenever a user changes their Exchange account password, their Portal/ LDAP password will change as well.
This means you will now only have to remember one username and password to access most campus systems, including:
• Exchange E-mail
• Chico Domain Login
• Portal
• VPN
• Wildcat Wireless
• Wildcat Dial-up
• WebCT
• EZ Proxy
• Purchasing Web Site
• PeopleSoft (Financials)
PeopleSoft / HRSA, Ad Astra and Brio will not be affected.
