5/12/08 - New Chico Domain Login Verbiage

As of today, computers that log into the Chico Domain (Macs and PCs) will receive new verbiage in the login banner regarding acceptable computer usage at CSU, Chico. The new wording was derived from new text mandated and approved by the Chancellor's office. Here is the new login verbiage:

This system is the property of California State University, Chico. Use of this system is subject to the policies and standards set forth by the CSU system and CSU, Chico at www.csuchico.edu/ires/policies. Unauthorized access or misuse of resources or disclosure of protected information may result in disciplinary or legal action. By continuing, you indicate your willingness to comply with applicable policies and standards.

 

Windows Vista and Office 2007--User Services Support Statement



As many of you have heard, Microsoft released the Windows Vista operating system to the public yesterday.  Office 2007 became available in January as well. User Services does not plan to support Windows Vista or Office 2007 for on-campus use for many months to come.  

Both applications incorporate a number of significant changes in operation and interaction with our computing environment that will require extensive compatibility testing and user training. All campus computers managed by User Services will continue to have Windows XP and Office 2003 installed for the foreseeable future.

Home Users: User Services does not recommend that home users upgrade their existing personal systems or purchase new systems with Windows Vista until we are able to determine any compatibility issues with campus systems.  

All major computer vendors are now offering Vista Home as the only operating system available for new home/consumer level machines. This is a significant change from the past, where consumers could choose to stay with a known previous operating system for a period of time.

Because of the vendor driven move to Windows Vista for new consumer machines, User Services recognizes that our home users will be starting to use Windows Vista before we will be supporting it for enterprise use. We have purchased licensing for Windows Home Premium, so that we can commence basic compatibility testing for applications that are essential for communication with campus systems (VPN, WebCT Campus Edition, WebCT Vista, PeopleSoft, etc.).  We will be posting our results to the web over the next several weeks.
