Daylight Savings Time Update 2007

Smart Phones

Daylight savings time has been changed starting March 11, 2007. In compliance with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 daylight savings time will start three weeks earlier and end one week later than past years. Windows Mobile smart phones are effected by this daylight savings time change. Windows Mobile phones will need to be updated by applying a software patch to deal with the time change.

Windows Mobile

There is an update available for Windows Mobile smart phones. Our testing of of this update has been successful when done wirelessly. However, if the patch does not install successfully on your phone the only option may be to reset the phone, erasing all data you may have stored on the phone. If this is a concern you should backup up any data that you have stored on your phone.

The Windows Mobile update can be installed wirelessly (alternate instructions for users connecting through their PC available here) using the following steps:

These steps were tested on a Treo 700W. The procedure may vary on other phone models.

  1. Using the Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile browser on your device, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx and download the Daylight Saving Time 2007 Update for Windows Mobile. Once you are at this page use the following instructions:
    1. Click on the Download the Daylight Saving Time 2007 update for your Windows Mobile Device link.
    2. Click on the Begin Download Process link.
    3. Click on the I accept link.
    4. Click on the Download for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices link.
    5. Click the Yes button on the Download confirmation window. The update should install now, you should get a message stating: DST2007.CAB was successfully installed on your device. If you get the following error it can be ignored: The program you have installed may not display properly because it was designed for a previous version of Windows Mobile software.
  2. After running the update, you must manually change the time zone once on your device. Use the following directions:
    1. Go to Start > Settings > System tab > Clock & Alarms.
    2. Change the current time zone to any time zone other than the one that is currently selected.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Click the Yes button on the Settings change confirmation window.
    5. Re-open Clocks & Alarms.
    6. Change the current time zone to the one you want to use (GMT-8 Pacific US).
    7. Click OK.
    8. Click the Yes button on the Settings change confirmation window.

Your phone software is now updated. If calendar items are at an incorrect time during the extended daylight savings time period it is now safe to manually update them.
