User Services is currently in Pilot to test the the installation, configuration and training materials that we have developed for Office 2007. We are working with many departments on campus to ensure compatibility with campus applications and information systems. As we continue to pilot Office 2007 you might receive files that are in the Office 2007 file format. Office 2007 files can be identified by the new file extension ending in .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx. The new Open XML file format is not natively compatible with previous versions of Office. User Services highly recommends that you install the compatibility pack or converter appropriate for your operating system to provide compatibility.

Users interested in Office 2007 are encouraged to visit http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/HA101686561033.aspx to learn about the operational differences in Office 2007.

File Compatibility

In Office 2007, Microsoft has made some pivotal changes to the file types that the applications of the Office Suite uses. In using Office 2007 or Office 2007 files, you will notice compatibility issues with older versions of office (e.g. 2003). Also, as with any major software upgrade, complete compatibility with all third party plug-ins isn't yet available. Microsoft is providing a patch for Office 2003 which will allow 2003 users to open documents created in Office 2007. Tutorials for the patch and a converter available for the Macintosh are available from the link below.
