Get started at CSU Chico

-Before you worry about benefits, you need to get enrolled at Chico State. Here are the necessary steps to be admitted-

Step 1: Apply for admission

In order to finalize your benefit package, you must be admitted to CSU, Chico.  To determine your entry status, please select from the following options:

Do you have less than 60 semester (90 quarter) transferable units?

(Note:  All veterans receive college credit from basic training, etc. that makes you a transfer student even though you may have never attended a college or university.  We are not traditionally open to lower division applicants but may make exceptions for veterans.)

Do you have more than 60 semester (90 quarter) transferable units?

 

Step 2: Contact Office of Veteran Affairs

a. You must apply to the VA to get your education benefits started. For more information about this, go here.

b. If you are interested in getting a work study job, contact a local VA office and apply for VA Work Study position.

c. Emergency loans are available to students through the Financial Aid office. You might need one of these to hold you over until your benefits start.

d. Enroll in WAVE. This is a VA web site that allows you to manage your education benefits online. Find out more about it here. Note: The WAVE system does not work for all benefits.

 

Step 3: Contact Financial Aid Office

  • Start the application for financial aid through here-- priority deadline is March 2nd. VA Educational benefits are non-taxable and are not counted as income.

Note: Most Veterans are qualified for financial aid grant money. These grants do not need to be paid back.

 

Step 4: Contact Academic Advising

a. Get in touch with an academic adviser for information about what classes you should register for during your first semester at Chico State.

b. Attend Summer orientation. This is an important step because you can meet with an academic adviser and enroll in classes early. Our office also organizes an orientation specifically for veterans. Please contact us if you are interested in attending.

c. Register for classes. Try to register as early as possible because some classes at Chico State fill up quickly, especially general education courses.
