Get started at CSU Chico

These Steps will lead you through the process of becoming enrolled at CSU Chico and activating your benefits.

Step 1: Apply for admission

Students who wish to be enrolled at CSU Chico must apply through CSU Mentor.  CSU Mentor will allow you to apply to any school within the CSU System.  Ensure that you indicate your status as a Veteran to take advantage of Veteran Privileges.  For more information, contact the CSU Chico Office of Veterans' Affairs at (530) 898-5911 or at: va@csuchico.edu

In order to finalize your benefit package, you must be admitted to CSU, Chico.

To determine your entry status, please select from the following options:

Do you have less than 60 semester (90 quarter) transferable units?

(Note:  All veterans receive college credit from basic training, etc. that makes you a transfer student even though you may have never attended a college or university.  We are not traditionally open to lower division applicants but may make exceptions for veterans.)

Step 2: Contact Office of Veteran Affairs

a. To Start your Education Benefits, you must apply to the VA through VONAPP.  Direct Deposit is recommended during the VONAPP Application.

b. If you are interested in getting a work study job, contact a local VA office and apply for VA Work Study position.

c. Emergency loans are available to students through the Financial Aid office. You might need one of these to hold you over until your benefits begin.

Step 3: Contact Financial Aid Office

Start the application for financial aid through here-- priority deadline is March 2nd. VA Educational benefits are non-taxable and are not counted as income.

Note: Most Veterans are qualified for financial aid grant money. These grants do not need to be paid back.  VA Educational Benefits are not taxable income and do not count as income for non-tuition based Financial Aid.

Step 4: Contact Academic Advising

a. Get in touch with an academic adviser for information about what classes you should register for during your first semester at Chico State.

b. Attend Summer Orientation. This is an important step because you can meet with an academic adviser and enroll in classes early. Our office also organizes an orientation specifically for veterans. Please contact us if you are interested in attending.  Veterans receive a discounted rate for Orientation.

c. Register for classes. Try to register as early as possible because some classes at Chico State fill up quickly, especially general education courses.
