Starting or Transferring your Benefits

 Each VA program requires different paperwork. Below are separate checklists describing how to start or transfer each benefit. If you are unsure about what program you are eligible for, go here to see a brief description of all VA educational benefits.

Veterans and Reservists/Guard

Starting or transferring Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill

  1. If you have never used this specific benefit before, go here and apply.
  2. Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affairs forms and bring them in, fax them to our office or email us signed copies. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
  3. We also need a copy of your Chapter 33 award letter from the VA. This letter tells you what percentage of the benefit you have been awarded and how many months of benefits you are entitled to.

Starting or transferring your Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill

  1. If you have never used this specific benefit before, go here and apply.
  2. Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affairs forms and bring them in, fax them to our office or email them to us. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
  3. If you have never used benefits before, you must bring in a copy of your DD214.

Starting or transferring your Chapter 31: Vocational Rehabilitation

  1. If you have never used this specific benefit before, go here and apply.
  2. Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affair forms and bring them in or fax them to our office. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
  3. We also need a VA Form 28-1905 provided by your case manager. If you don't know what this means or who your case manager is, please call or email us.

 Starting or Transferring your 1606 Select Reserve Benefits

  1. If you have never used this specific benefit before, go here and apply.
  2.  Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affair forms and bring them in or fax them to our office. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
  3. We also need a copy of your DD Form 2384-1 Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE). This is a form you get from your unit. Talk to your educational officer or find out more about the NOBE and 1606 benefits here.

Starting or Transferring your 1607 REAP Benefits

  1. If you have never used this specific VA benefit before, go here and apply.
  2. Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affair forms and bring them in or fax them to our office. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
  3. If you have never used benefits before we need a copy of your DD214.

Dependents

California College Fee Waiver Program

  1. Go here to find the application.
  2. Take it to a County Veteran Service Office.
  3. Mail, fax or bring in a copy of the award letter to our office.
  4. You must reapply for this benefit for every academic year you plan to attend a California State University.

Note: The college fee waiver only covers state tuition. Students receiving the waiver must still pay Chico State student fees.

Starting or transferring your Chapter 35 Benefits

  1. If you have never used this specific benefit before, go here and apply.
  2. Next, fill out these two CSU Chico Office of Veteran Affair forms and bring them in or fax them to our office. 
    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.

Note: If you are eligible for this benefit you may be eligible for the California College Fee Waiver Program.

Starting or transferring Chapter 33: Post 9/11 GI Bill (Dependents)

    • Fill out an Intake Form. This is a biography sheet telling us what kind of benefits you plan to use.
    • Fill out a Fall/Spring application or Summer/Intersession application. You need to sign this application before every term you plan to use educational benefits at Chico State.
