Local Veteran Resources
Chico is a great community for fun-loving college students, families, and especially veterans. It has a very capable Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic that can provide low-cost and sometimes no-cost healthcare for veterans. There is also a Vet Center which provides counseling and readjustment services for combat veterans. The Butte County Veterans Service Office helps veterans access benefits and process disability claims. The Butte County Employment Development Department has a veteran employment representative. The Chico Veterans Memorial Hall is a nexus for veteran service organizations and hosts several veteran appreciation and social events throughout the year. There is also a shelter for homeless veterans.
On Campus, the Chico State Office of Veterans Affairs will assist each student veteran calculate their education benefits. Chico State has developed a network of administration officials and the SVO who are dedicated to addressing veteran-specific issues on campus. This team is called the Veteran Education Support Team (VEST), and it has helped make Chico State a leader in supporting veteran education.
Some benefits of being a Chico State student veteran include priority registration and lowered cost summer orientation. It also provides access to a large network of veteran alumni and community supporters who actively recruit veterans from Chico State for employment. There are several veteran-specific tax-free work study positions. In addition to existing benefits, the Chico State Student Veteran Organization is currently advocating for a Veteran Resource Center for student veterans to study, relax, share information, or socialize with other veterans.
