Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, CSU, Chico

The Second Annual "Dean's Cup" Competition

The Dean’s Cup is an academic competition that pits teams of graduating seniors from each College against one another in a test of problem solving, critical thinking, analytical ability and writing.

Selected graduating seniors from each College will take a 100-minute exam – the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) exam – administered on the CSU, Chico campus in late March/early April.  The team with the highest average score wins the Dean’s Cup trophy for their College.  High scorer on the exam wins $500!!!  High scorer from each College team wins $100!!!

Last year’s winning team hailed from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. Congratulations HFA! Kevin Martins, College of Business, was the high-scorer overall and winner of the $500 prize. Six additional students, one from each College Dean’s Team, received $100 each.

The exam presents various scenarios or prompts to students who then create a written argument based on the information provided. The exam is entirely on-line and is intended to draw on students’ analytical and critical thinking abilities in formulating a response.  Examples of the kinds of tasks found on the CLA are available at: http://www.cae.org/content/pro_collegiate_sample_measures.htm.

The exam is scored by an independent panel.  Results will be available in Summer 2009 and winners will be announced at that time.  All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation and Letter of Commendation from the College dean.
