Guidelines for Proposals

NewOptions and Advising Patterns

These guidelines provide an overview of the procedures and formats for proposals. If the guidelines are unclear, or if your program has some unique characteristics that require special input, please contact Bitsy O'Connor, Academic Affairs for undergraduate programs, or Susan Place, Dean of the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS) for graduate programs.

Overview

While campuses may have unique definitions, an option and an advising pattern are defined for purposes of system review as an aggregate of courses within a degree major designed to give a student specialized knowledge, competence, or skill.

A new option or advising pattern may only be approved where adequate faculty, physical facilities, and library holdings sufficient to establish and maintain the option or advising pattern already exist or where such support can reasonable be expected to become available.

Each new option is subject to review and approval by the Office of the Chancellor unless it is exempted. Options are exempted from Chancellor's Office approval and are approved by the university president if the academic subject category is among those listed in Executive Order No. 602. For questions regarding exempted subjects, contact Academic Affairs.
