Belle W. Y. Wei joined California State University, Chico as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs on August 1, 2012. Prior to her arrival, Dr. Wei has served in an expanding range of leadership positions at San José State University (SJSU), first as professor of electrical engineering, then as department chair, and most recently as the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering's Don Beall Dean of Engineering. Provost Wei worked as a visiting associate professor at Stanford in 1993-1994.  Her academic training includes a bachelor’s degree in Biophysics from U.C. Berkeley, a master’s degree in Engineering from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from U.C. Berkeley.

For more than 25 years, Provost Wei has advanced a dynamic and successful agenda of global thinking, academic excellence, and student success. At SJSU she initiated a number of global experiential learning programs designed to broaden students’ abilities to thrive in our increasingly interdependent and dynamic world. She launched new degree programs and research grants, and championed programs that expanded educational access to historically underrepresented groups. Collaborating with leaders around the world, Dr. Wei served on the Engineering Deans Council’s Executive Board (and chair of its Diversity Committee) of American Society for Engineering Education, and as a founding board member of U.S.-China Green Energy Council.

Provost Wei's accomplishments have garnered broad national and international recognition. Her awards include the 2007 Electrical Engineering Times Educator of the Year Award, the 2008 U.C. Berkeley Outstanding Electrical Engineering Alumnus Award, the 2010 Silicon Valley Business Journal Women of Influence Award, and the 2011 Silicon Valley YWCA Tribute to Women Award. In early 2012, Provost Wei accepted a White House invitation to participate in the President Council on Jobs and Competitiveness "10,000 Engineers Initiative." Embracing interdisciplinary thinking and dedicated to student success, Provost Wei brings experience and vision to her new academic home here at CSU, Chico.
