VPAA Faculty Professional Development Funding Guidelines

Below are the revised guidelines for General Fund faculty and chair professional development funds. They are intended to be internal guidelines for the allocation of AA faculty development funding to the colleges, assuming the AA budget permits such an allocation. Deans are responsible for allocating, monitoring, and assessing success of AA General Fund allocations for faculty excellence at college and departmental levels.

The Division of Academic Affairs will distribute, budget permitting, General Fund allocations for faculty excellence according to the following guidelines:

Professional Development Funding for Tenured/Tenure-Track Faculty:

  • Allocations for professional development are at an average rate of $600 per year for tenured/tenure-track (T/TT) faculty appointments and should not be viewed as allocations to individual faculty.
  • Allocations for faculty development are determined on the basis of T/TT faculty headcount, not full-time equivalent faculty (FTEF).
  • Faculty on sabbatical are eligible for professional development funding.

Professional Development Funding for Department Chairs:

  • Allocations for professional development for AY or 12-month department chairs and/or members of the University Council of Chairs will be made at the rate of $600 per year. Please consult the most current Chairs Roster maintained by the Academic Senate for your chair’s eligibility for these funds.

Incentive Funding for New Faculty:

  • Incentive funds at the rate of $3,000 per year will be allocated for new tenure-track faculty appointments for the first two years of their career at CSU, Chico.
  • New Faculty Incentive Funds are distributed based on new tenure-track faculty headcount, not full-time equivalent faculty (FTEF).
  • New faculty are encouraged to work with their deans/chairs and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to use incentive funding to establish their scholarly and creative research programs.
  • Faculty members who are hired with tenure are not eligible for New Faculty Incentive Funds.

Interpretation of the Guidelines

  • Deans are responsible for allocating, monitoring, and assessing success of divisional General Fund allocations for faculty excellence at college and departmental levels.
  • Normally, allocations for faculty excellence are to be expended during the academic year for which they are awarded.  Deans are authorized to carry forward 10% of their college/library’s General Fund professional development current-year allocation to the next fiscal year; carry-forward returns will be at the college/library level.  Unspent funds beyond the authorized 10% carry-forward will be rolled back to the divisional level.
  • Department chairs are eligible for both faculty development funds and chair development funds.
  • Associate deans with faculty appointments are eligible for faculty development funds.
  • Probationary faculty in their first two years are eligible for both the New Faculty Incentive Funds and faculty development funds.
  • Full-time temporary faculty are not included in faculty excellence funding allocations.
