Planning for the Future: Budget Challenges in Academic Affairs

Dear Faculty, Staff, Students, and Visitors:

As one of the 23 campuses in the California State University System, we will need to reduce our budget for the coming fiscal year, 2003-2004. The Division of Academic Affairs has been actively planning for budget reductions since the spring of 2002, when I convened a budget retreat to ask the deans and vice provosts to reduce their budgets by 5% for the 2002-2003 academic year. At that time, we established a set of Budget Principles to guide our future actions. We have continued to meet and discuss the state's financial situation and believe we must develop multi-year strategies that will allow us to weather continued difficult economic circumstances.

As we develop possible scenarios for managing our budget, we invite your input. Please read the related documents we have assembled, and send to us your comments, questions and suggestions. (See the "Comments" option on the left.) We will post new updates about the budget to this site.

We look forward to hearing from you and to maintaining an open dialogue about how best to meet Chico State's mission, vision, and five strategic priorities in Academic Affairs.

Sincerely,

Scott McNall
