Annual Budget for Academic Year 2008-2009
Based on the 2007-08 budget plan's policies, the State of California is expected to face operating shortfalls of more than $5 billion in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. Indeed, data on major tax receipts collected in the first months of the 2007-08 fiscal year suggest that California could face a $14 billion operating deficit or more in 2008-9 if the state's economy and soft housing market continue. On November 5, 2007 Governor Schwarzenegger ordered all state agency directors to formulate plans to reduce budgets by 10 percent for the spending blueprint the governor will unveil in January 2008. Economists warn that the administration should prepare for more bad news.
