RSS is a type of technology that allows you to subscribe to "feeds" that will automatically notifiy you of updated news without having to check back to the source web site. RSS stands for "Really Simply Syndication."

What is an RSS Reader?

An RSS reader, or RSS aggregator, is program or Web site which collects "feeds" from sources which you subscribed to and organizes them in a simple, easy to read fashion.

Step 1: Get an RSS Reader

To subscribe to the Web Services RSS feed you will need to use an RSS reader. We recomend using a web-based RSS reader like:

If you prefer, there are standalone RSS readers, or RSS aggregators, available for downlaod. These aggregators act much the way an email program such as Microsoft Outlook acts, but instead of receiving mail, it receives RSS headlines from feeds you suscribe to. Free aggreagators are available for download, including:

Step 2: Subscribe

Once you have an RSS reader, all you need to do is subscribe to the RSS feed. This requires copying the url of the news feed (http://www.csuchico.edu/web/news.xml) and pasting it into the "Subscribe" box of your RSS reader.  You can copy this link by right-clicking on it and selecting "Copy Link Location" (Firefox) or "Copy Shortcut" (Internet Explorer). If you left-click on link, you will see the actual RSS code (below). In that case, simply copy the URL in the address bar and paste the link into the subscription box in your preferred reader (below).
