We also welcome all non-tenure track faculty. We are currently compiling a list and will be adding these names as soon as possible.
How can WFA help you?
WFA provides mentoring, networking, and advocacy for female faculty. We do have male faculty members who have joined us at meetings, and we also welcome their support. In the past, WFA has provided a list of names that female faculty could contact when in immediate need of advice and support. We referred to this group as our SWAT team. We are in the process of updating this list. WFA has also existed to help female faculty meet each other and share ideas and laughter.
Don't we already have a union for all faculty? Why would we need WFA?
WFA is not a union. However, glass ceilings and discrimination still exist in academia. As we update our new website, we will be posting studies that show just how prevalent this is. We plan to give female faculty the resources to make sure that they are getting the same compensation and benefits as their male peers. We plan to find new leadership opportunities for women and help monitor CSU hiring practices to make sure qualified women are receiving offers from our institution. We want to provide social opportunities for female faculty to learn from each other's experiences. In Spring 2006, we met and discussed pressing issues for faculty including discriminatory pay and promotion practices, safety issues, and concerns about how to best deal with disruptive students in the classroom. We work closely with CFA in many areas, and they are strong supporters of our organization. Unlike CFA, WFA is not directly involved in labor negotiations with the university. For more information about CFA, please follow this link: CFA Website.
Who is running WFA and how do I contact them?
Lori Beth Way and Lana Burris, Ph.D. have volunteered to co-lead this organization. Both can be contacted at 898-6345. We are also looking for a treasurer if you would like to volunteer.
How much does it cost to join?
You do not have to pay anything to join us at our events, but we do ask for a $10 membership fee per academic year to become an official member. This fee helps defray the costs of our activities.
SOME QUICK TIPS FOR ACCLIMATING TO CHICO AND CHICO STATE
Good cheap eats near campus: Smokin' Mo's Barbecue, Moxies, Pluto's, Thai House, Grilla Bites (health food)
Moderately priced lunches near campus: The Black Crow, Tres Hombres, Jedidiah's
Parking: Parking is most crowded on campus at the beginning of the semester and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so plan accordingly. Fridays the parking lots are usually less crowded.
Getting Around: Don't confuse your 8th Avenue with 8th Street. In general, it is helpful to think of the neighborhood just north of Chico State as the avenues and just south as the streets. Be aware of the one way streets downtown especially when you have new drivers in town. Chico is laid out in a grid pattern so not that difficult when you learn a few tricks. The most confusing part is that we have streets that have several different names at different places. For example, the 32 is also Nord and Walnut and 9th Street depending on where you are on it. East turns into Manzanita which turns into Bruce. Highway 99 cuts through the majority of Chico but watch out for those short on ramps during busy times.
The Weather: Even though Fall is coming, you will have very hot days in the middle of the day and cooler mornings and evenings. Dressing in layers can be a good idea. Winter is either rainy and cool or dry and colder. Snow is rare in Chico but can often be spotted nearby in Paradise and Forest Ranch at slightly higher elevations. In Spring, the weather is perfect, and the campus is in its glory. Summer is dry and hot, with occasional temperatures in the 100's for short periods.
A Few Things to Do in Chico: Go to Bidwell Park, attend a Chico Outlaws game (bring shades) or attend women's sports (the basketball team made the finals last year), see an artsy film at the Pageant Theater on cheap night (Mondays), tour the Bidwell Mansion, attend a Farmer's Market on Thursday nights downtown or Saturday morning in the parking lot off of 2nd. Bike anywhere. Chico is often mentioned in biking magazines as a city made for biking.
Looking to meet other professionals and not run into so many students? Try Molly Gunn's at the Holiday Inn, The Black Crow, Christian Michael's, Fifth Street Steakhouse. Also, check into joining one of Chico's many special interest clubs. (Get a free copy of the Chico News & Review which comes out on Thursdays. They let you know what's going on in town). Attend campus socials. Check out Chico Performances. There are some great performers heading to campus this year.
Please check back as we are in the midst of revising our entire website. Check back for more information including sections on parenting at Chico State, diversity issues, and how to support female faculty, staff, and students on campus!
