The 2012 Spring Season officially started on Tuesday, January 17th with the start of “Hell Week”. With the advise from several Chico State Women’s Lacrosse Alum, the physical fitness portion for Double Days was established. We could not have ask for better weather...Cold, Rainy, and Windy. This is normal Chico Weather for this time of year but “Hell” for the players.
We currently have 16 players on our Roster and had 14 players in Chico to participate in “Hell Week”. Two players, one whom underwent knee surgery and the other with an advance commitment, were unable to attend. All the players have been on a off season 8 week Winter Break Conditioning Program and it became obvious that a few may not have trained.
During the week, our ladies overcame the Bridge Run, Barf Ball, Bleacher Run, Pyramid Run, the dreaded Butte Stairs, Interval Sprints, Continuous 3 Man Weave, Suicides, Relay Races, a slew of abs, and the 4 mile Highway 99 Run. They were also exposed to learning our Man to Man Defense, Zone Defense, Clears, Clear Defense, and Offensive Plays. They worked on stick skills and did an assortment of stick skill drills.
Most of the practices were held outside, in the cold windy wet weather. Our Alumni should be proud of the fortitude and determination that these young women put forth. No whining, complaining, or gripes. Yes, there were injuries, aches, and pains but they persevered. The Chico State Women’s Lacrosse Team is off to a great start for 2012.
“Hell Week” stand outs were numerous. Mel Wilkerson is and proved to be our best physical athlete during the week. Amanda Leary showed that she worked extremely hard over the Winter Break and increased her stock in the team. However, I was extremely impressed by Micaela Hayden and Jenna Brady for their effort and endurance. All the players showed heart, desire, and determination. This week went a long way in bonding this team together.
We now have three weeks before our first game against our Division rival, UC Davis. US Lacrosse polls have them ranked at #2 in the Nation. During Fall Ball we played them at the Davis Play Day and did fairly well. However, they will be more determined to beat us and to beat us soundly to keep their ranking. The Chico State Wildcats have to be ready, take care of the ball, play smart, and play within our system. The 16 ladies on this team have plenty of potential and will surprise plenty of people. The UC Davis game is slated for Saturday, February 11th @ 11am in Chico on our Stadium Field. In the case of rain, the game will be held at UC Davis on their turf field (Same day and time). I hope you will be able to come out and support the Wildcats. This will be a great year to be connected to Chico State.
As always, I will continue to update our supporters on a regular basis. If you have any questions, concerns, and/or ideas please do not hesitate to ask. We are family...Coach Carnes!

The #2 Ranked UC Davis Aggies were too much for the Wildcats on this day. Chico State played well and was within 3 scores (7 to 10) at the early start of the third quarter but were unable to capitalize. The Wildcats were scoreless in the last 15 minutes of the game and fell to Davis 20 to 8.
As a team, we now see where we want to be. It will take hard work and leadership to get us to that level of competitiveness. This game pointed out several areas that we need to address. However, these players are determined and dedicated to improve and face the challenges. We need to learn to play within our scheme and within ourselves. We are a young team with great potential and room for growth.
The Game was not without outstanding contributions. Our Goalie, Theea Peters, was awarded the game ball. She compiled 20 saves and got nominated by the coaching staff from Davis for All League. However, if you were to ask her she would tell you that she should have had 30 saves.
Micaela Hayden was our top scorer with 5 goals. Jenna Brady had two and Geneva Desin had one with one assist. On the defensive side of the ball, Rachael Crosby and Mel Wilkerson were both stand outs.
This coming week we will iron out all those problem areas that UC Davis exposed and we will be ready for the Santa Barbara Shoot Out on February 18th and 19th. We will be ready when we face CSU San Marcos, USC, UC San Diego, and the University of San Diego. If we can play an entire game the way we played Davis for three quarters we will be very competitive and very successful.
I would like to thank all the fans and family members that came out for our Home Opener. I am sure the players were delighted with the great turnout. I truly hope that all of you get a chance to support these amazing young ladies when we are in Santa Barbara. Let’s Rock the Place!
I will continue to keep you updated on our quest to the playoffs. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your support...Coach Carnes!
