Chico State defeated University of Reno Saturday in a shut out match, closing the game 33-0.
Just two minutes in, scrumhalf Carrie White, senior, took a penalty kick and put three points on the board, giving Chico State a jump start that carried them through the game.
Caitlin Fontana, freshman, picked the ball off a ruck and crashed up the center to score her second try of the season, only six minutes after the penalty kick. The conversion was missed.
With another shot for a penalty kick, White closed out the first half by adding another three points to the scoreboard. The first half ended, 11-0.
Reno came out fighting in the second half, however, and held Chico State until 23 minutes in.
Breaking through four defenders, prop Jen Madison scored Chico State’s second try of the game. She scored from a penalty play, when White exploited a gap down center field.
But Madison didn’t let up for even ten minutes.
Only nine minutes after she scored the second try of the match, Madison did it again. She touched it down after rolling through the defense, bringing Chico State’s score up to 21 points.
The clock was winding down, but Chico State was just getting started.
On a breakaway, Gina Caianiello scored 26 minutes in and White converted the kick.
With Reno still on their heels, Melanie Promes, freshman lock, scored the final try of the match in the final minute.
Chico State has one more league game. Their match against Cal Berkeley on March 15 determines the standings at sweet sixteen’s. They look forward to another blowout like Saturday’s.
