Chico is a town with more to offer than a well-rounded college experience. Its history is as rich as its landscape and its unique character is reflected in the people who live here. Evidence of John and Annie Bidwell's influence on what was once the Chico Rancheria is present throughout this small town. Bidwell Mansion, a state historic landmark, is regularly visited by tourists, and Bidwell Park is a frequent hangout for both Chico State students and Chico locals. One Mile and Bear Hole on Big Chico Creek provide relief to members of the community during the heat of the summer. The Downtown Plaza attracts crowds for free Friday
Night Concerts and offers a shady spot to relax or have a picnic. Students
often spend their free time browsing through downtown's specialty shops
or listening to the latest music at Tower Records. Occupants of this town take pride in its uniqueness and express it through their continuous support of local merchants and programs, such as the nationally-famous Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Orient and Flume Art Glass. And only in Chico can you find such icons as Madison Bear Garden ("The Bear"), Bird in Hand (which also houses a yo-yo museum), Ray's, and the Crazy Horse Saloon. Relaxed, laid-back, mellow, and friendly are all words which apply to this quaint town. It's a place where smiles still appear on strangers' faces as you pass them on the street.
