Glenn Kendall Public
Service Award
Each year this $500 award, sponsored by President
Emeritus Glenn Kendall, recognizes one outstanding graduating
senior who has shown exemplary scholarship and public service
in the University and the community. The recipient's academic
record must indicate promising public service after completing
studies at Chico State. Selection criteria includes record of
outstanding scholarship, special studies, projects, and field
work in areas involving public service; record of outstanding
public service within the University and the community; record
of proven ability to work effectively with others; and evidence
of traits indicating a dedication to the well-being of people.

Sherilyn Peek
Ms. Peek is a Liberal Arts major with an outstanding
academic record and stellar in-class performance. While a Chico
State student, Sherilyn has been involved with every student organization,
event, and performance related to theatre and music. Her community
service record spans 15 written pages. She organized and was executive
producer of the Newman Center Benefit Concerts; she was a scholarship
recipient, section leader, and soloist with the First Baptist
Church Choir; and she performed in productions presented by community
theatre groups. Sherilyn's mentors and peers regard her as talented,
reliable, focused, dedicated, and a person with unlimited inspiration
and potential.

Outstanding Service
to Student Government Award
Nearly 300 students are actively involved in
positions within the Associated Students Government. This award
is sponsored by Maggie Pattison, who indelibly touched the lives
of the many student leaders she helped guide through her 23 years
of professional and personal dedication to the Associated Students.
This $250 award is given to an individual undergraduate student
who has demonstrated a high level of commitment and volunteer
service within the Associated Students.

Elaine Lucero
Ms. Lucero embodies the belief that building community
and making change is a personal process that is constantly evolving.
Elaine is currently an active member of both the AS. Multicultural
Affairs and Re-Entry Affairs Councils and serves as Vice President
of the campus' Health Professionals Association. She also is a
Re-Entry mentor in the department of Health and Community Services,
participated in the Bidwell Environmental clean-up program, has
conducted surveys for the Cancer Society, and was involved in
Butte County's Safe Sex Kits program. Ms. Lucero also volunteers
to teach prenatal and Lamaze classes in the community. Elaine
certainly does demonstrate the potential of our students to make
a difference.

Enhancement
of Multicultural Understanding Award
This $500 award is presented annually to an individual
or campus organization that has contributed significantly to the
development of a positive multicultural environment at California
State University, Chico. The contribution may be in the form of
leadership, programs and events, or similar activities. This award
is sponsored by Student Affairs and individual Student Affairs staff
members. |

Associated Students Environmental Affairs Council

The Associated Students Environmental Affairs Council
(EAC) has operated on campus since 1990. For the past year, the
EAC has collaborated with the AS. Multicultural Council to focus
on an issue that both groups have in common?environmental justice.
The two groups have co-sponsored programs, exchanged members,
and each council currently has a liaison to the other. This semester
these two liaisons are giving class talks on the issue of environmental
racism. This spring, the EAC has scheduled a month of programming
designed to reach out to different groups on campus?their theme:
"One Earth, One Destiny."

Outstanding
CAVE Volunteer Award
Each year an outstanding CAVE volunteer is the
recipient of a $500 cash award endowed by Longs Drugstores Foundation.
Any full-time student who is a field volunteer in one of CAVE's
programs during the current year is eligible. Students may apply
for the award or may be nominated by others. The recipient is an
individual who demonstrates a strong commitment to service and volunteerism
in the spirit of making a difference in the Chico community. |

Comfort Carroll
Comfort is a sophomore music major from Sonoma,
CA. Comfort has volunteered at CAVE for five consecutive semesters
in four different programs. She has been a big sister for two
years and has volunteered at three different state facilities.
In addition, Comfort has worked her way up the staff ladder? starting
as a group leader, moving up to program coordinator, and is currently
the Kids Program Director. She is responsible for 11 different
programs and supervises a staff of 36 students. Despite the enormous
responsibility of the position, it is impressive that Comfort
continues to make time to be a field volunteer.

Chris Hilbert
Outstanding Chico State Friend Award
The last few months of nineteen year old Christopher
Edward Hilbert's life were spent at CSU, Chico. His time here was
short, but he quickly appreciated and personified the best aspects
of the Chico experience. He did this through a genuine love for
the many new friends he made, the faculty who taught him and aided
his learning, and the total experience of the University and the
community. His family has endowed an annual $2,000 award to be given
to a student who exemplifies those qualities which make for a true
friend to fellow students and to Chico State. |

Jeffery DeFranco
Mr. DeFranco is majoring in Child Development with
two minors in Recreation and Psychology. He is a competent, articulate,
enthusiastic, and motivated student and he encourages other students
to take advantage of available campus opportunities. Jeff has
been a trip leader for AS. Adventure Outings for over two years.
He is a Group Facilitator for the CSU, Chico Climbing Wall, a
Ropes Course Facilitator, and an instructor for the Red Cross
Community First Aid and CPR program. He has volunteered with the
Campus Wellness Center, AS. Environmental Affairs Council, CAVE,
and the Fun Without Alcohol Fair.

Outstanding
Student Organization Advisor Award
Each spring students are invited to nominate
student organization advisors for this $500 award sponsored by Friends
of Myles Tracy. The Outstanding Student Organization Advisor Award
is designed to honor advisors who have consistently demonstrated
dedication, a caring attitude, availability to students, career
and life planning advising, frequent contact and involvement with
members of the organization, and participation in service to their
respective student organizations. |

Mark Stemen
Mr. Stemen advises the AS. Environmental Affairs
Council, the AS. Recycling Program, and the General Union of Palestine
Students. Mark is an ideal student advisor. He is a mentor, a
role model, and a friend to students. He has an open and approachable
advising style, and makes himself available to students every
day of the week. Mark brings extra-curricular activities to the
classroom and the genuine enthusiasm he brings to his field is
contagious. He was instrumental in the creation of the environmental
studies minor and is the core of an emerging center of excellence
on this campus in the area of environmental studies. This spring
Mark completed his doctorate in history at the University of Iowa.
