Special Awards
ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADER AWARDS
Nominated by their deans/directors, one student from each
of the nine CSU, Chico colleges and schools is honored as an AS. Outstanding
Student Leader each spring. These students stand out in terms of grade
point average, personal contributions in class, and participation in
extracurricular activities. All but one of these awards is sponsored
in the amount of $500 each. In addition, one of the nine recipients
is chosen as the recipient of the $500 University Outstanding Student
Leader Award which is sponsored by Tim Hanna and Lindo, Hanna, & Abbott
Insurance.

Meagan Ferguson
College of Agriculture

Ms. Ferguson is completing her Bachelor of Science
degree in Agricultural Business this spring. She is a wonderful
student, a high achiever, and expects nothing but the best from
herself. Meagan has proven her ability to master difficult subject
matter?she is inquisitive and insightful. She is an active member
of the Society of Agricultural Managers, Chico State's Women's
Volleyball team, and the Chico State Dairy Science Club. In addition,
Meagan belongs to three honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma,
Phi Kappa Phi, and Golden Key. She has assisted with the coordination
of University Farm activities and is involved in the outreach
program to recruit agriculture students from California high schools.

Lisa Calvert
College of Behavioral & Social Sciences
Sponsor: Valene Smith
Ms. Calvert is an exemplary student, dedicated to
learning the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field
of social work. Lisa combines an impressive academic record with
her service to the community and commitment to her academic major.
Lisa is a founder and president of the Student Association of
Social Workers. Her leadership initiated the campus celebration
of "Social Work Awareness Month." She is dedicated to creating
a more professional image for social work students. Lisa is a
member of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key and Pinnacle honor societies.
She is a parent volunteer at Durham Elementary School, teaches
for the local 4-H Club, and volunteers at Catalyst.

Suzanne Cozad
College of Business
Sponsor: Wells Fargo Bank
Ms. Cozad excels scholastically by maintaining
a very high GPA in her double majors of Accounting and Management
Information Systems. Suzanne embodies scholarship, leadership,
and community service. She has been involved with Students in
Free Enterprise (SIFE), holding the offices of Vice President
of Public Relations and President. Suzanne has helped the Chico
State SIFE team achieve local, regional, and national recognition
for the innovation, impact and influence of its outreach projects.
As a result of her work with SIFE, Suzanne received the Award
for Excellence in Outstanding Community Service from the Campus
Outreach Opportunity League, a national honor.

Earl Jessee
College of Communication and Education
Sponsor: Lance Lew
Mr. Jessee is an excellent student. A Graphic Design
major with a minor in Modern Jewish and Israeli Studies, Earl
has achieved academic success while working first at Lightside
Group and now at the Instructional Media Center, where he has
been involved in the design of Chico Statements. Earl has served
as the editor for the Orion Online since last fall. He is responsible
for the design, production, and maintenance of the award-winning
on-line editions. Earl is a member of Designers in Progress and
the Art Director for the Feed Alanna project.

Matthew Campbell
College of Engineering, Computer Science,
and Technology
Sponsor: Judy and Gary Sitton
Mr. Campbell is at the top of his Mechanical Engineering
class. His academic record is outstanding, achieving a place on
the Dean's List every semester. He is a member of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Phi Kappa Phi Honor
Society. He was the Project Director and Sponsorship Supervisor
for Chico State's ASME Human-Powered Vehicle Team. Currently Matt
is Vice President and Treasurer of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering
honor society. Matthew serves the community as well, through his
work with World in Motion, as a youth league soccer coach and
a Little League referee.

Svetlana Boyarkina

Programs

As a graduate student, Ms. Boyarkina is intelligent,
dedicated, enthusiastic, and insightful. "Sveta" is an international
student from Russia, pursuing a master's degree in Education with
an emphasis on teaching English as a second language. She returned
to Chico after spending one year at CSU, Chico on a Freedom Support
Scholarship in 1993-1994. Sveta has worked on campus as a tutor,
instructor, and activity coordinator for the American Language
and Culture Institute. She is currently a Russian language tutor
and interpreter for the University. In addition to her involvement
with the Russian Club, Sveta makes herself available to mentor
other Russian-speaking students.

Stephanie Rahlfs
College of Humanities and Fine Arts
Ms. Rahlfs, double majoring in Philosophy and Political Science,
has an outstanding record of service to the University community
and the State of California. She has served as President and Treasurer
for Phi Sigma Tau, the national philosophy honor society. She
is the current Associated Students Commissioner of Legislative
Affairs, and at the state level, holds an executive position as
Chair of the Legislative Affairs Committee for the California
State Student Association. She has worked on behalf of 350,000
CSU students to insure that their perspectives are represented
at the capital in Sacramento. Stephanie was a 1998 Rawlins Award
recipient and is also this year's recipient of the $500 University
Outstanding Student Leader Award.

Amy Palko

Ms. Palko exhibits a combination of dedicated leadership
and academic excellence. Amy is the current president of the Biological
Sciences Honor Society, Omicron Theta Epsilon, and Treasurer of
the Nutrition and Food Science Association. Amy has been credited
for the development of Omicron, and her ability to bring two departments,
Biological Sciences and Nutritional Food Science, together to
strengthen the organization. Amy is a member of the Golden Key
Honor Society, the Pre-Med Club, the American Dietetic Association,
and the Tennis Club. Amy's academic achievements are exemplary
as well. She has received a Rawlins Merit Award, a Corson Honor
Scholarship, and a Ritchie Scholarship.

Sandra Pessner
Undergraduate Education
Sponsor: Undergraduate Education
Ms. Pessner is an excellent example of Chico's highest
achieving students. Sandra is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society and her academic performance has earned her recognition
on the Dean's List each semester at CSU, Chico. Sandra discovered
her love of teaching while volunteering at her daughter's elementary
school. As a result, she chose to major in liberal studies. Sandra
has served over 500 volunteer hours in public schools. She is
a member of the Re-Entry Affairs council and the first Liberal
Studies mentor to serve in the Re-Entry Center.
