Only naive American individualism could imagine that a biomedical researcher in a hospital and a social scientist venturing alone into another society are equivalent. The power valences are exactly reversed. Power is always located in institutions, never in individuals. Risk is always borne by the individual, whether as "human subject" or as individual researcher.
