But is it going to go away? Probably not. The revised policy that keeps things pretty much the same as before was passed easily by the EPPC. We aren't really surprised. Power lies in institutions, and the individual--whether as "human subject" or as individual researcher--will remain subject to its control. Foucault traced the evolution of the "surveillance society" where everyone, always, is under scrutiny, their bodies disciplined by power diffused in local institutions. This is just what we've come to at the end of the millennium. |
